This summer, I spent my days on the moving truck, and I learned pretty quickly that moving is about a lot more than just lifting boxes and hauling furniture.
You get a front-row seat into people’s lives during some of their biggest transitions. And one thing that stood out right away is how genuinely kind and welcoming customers are.
1) Every move tells a different story
When you’re in someone’s home for the day, you learn a lot about them.
Some moves are:
- Families downsizing after kids have grown up and moved out
- New parents needing more space after welcoming a baby
- Couples starting a new chapter together
- Families relocating for work or a fresh start
Every move represents a life change, and it’s pretty cool to be a small part of that moment. You realize quickly that this job is about more than just moving things. It’s about helping people move forward.
2) Customers are more welcoming than you might expect
Before working on the truck, I didn’t fully realize how friendly and appreciative people are on moving day.
Customers open up their homes to you, trust you with their belongings, and often go out of their way to make sure the crew is taken care of.
That kind of environment makes a long day a lot more enjoyable.
3) Moving is a serious workout
Let me say this clearly, moving is no joke.
Hauling furniture and boxes all day:
- Tests your strength
- Pushes your endurance
- Keeps you moving nonstop
It’s a physically demanding job, and by the end of the day, you definitely feel it. Safe to say, you gain a lot of respect for anyone who does this work day in and day out.
4) Organization makes or breaks a move
One of the biggest things I learned this summer is how important organization is.
When a home is organized:
- Boxes are labeled
- Items are ready to go
- There’s a clear plan
Everything runs smoother.
And when the crew is organized:
- The truck is loaded efficiently
- Items are handled with care
- The entire move feels seamless
When both sides are organized, the move is honestly flawless.
5) Teamwork is everything
A successful move depends on everyone working together.
From the crew on the truck to the homeowner preparing for the move, when everyone is on the same page, it shows.
Communication, planning, and a strong team make all the difference.
Looking back, this summer gave me a whole new appreciation for what goes into every move.
It’s hard work, but it’s also rewarding work. You’re not just moving furniture, you’re helping people through important life moments, and that’s something you don’t fully understand until you experience it firsthand.
At Boerman Moving & Storage, this is what we’re proud of every day. A team that works hard, stays organized, and takes pride in being part of our customers’ stories.
Planning a move this fall or beyond? We’re ready to help you every step of the way.
