How To Prepare for Movers

There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to relocating, making it one of the most stressful events in life. Whether you’re downsizing to a new place or moving across town, there is a lot of preparation and planning that takes place prior to your move date to ensure everything goes smoothly. There are many ways of preparing for a move, but here at Boerman, we believe the following are the most crucial!

1. Declutter

How to prepare for movers

Before moving day, take the time to go through your home and get rid of the items you do not want to take. Not only will the moving crew have to load all your items, but they also have to unload it at destination. Getting rid of all unnecessary items before moving day will help avoid confusion and save you time, space, and money. Remember, the less items on the truck, the less you’ll spend!

2. Label and Inventory

Make sure to label your boxes to ensure an easier move-out and move-in process for everyone. This way, everyone will know what is staying, what is coming with, and what should be thrown away or donated. This helps the movers determine which items should go where on the truck, which ultimately makes it easier for everyone when they arrive at your destination since they will have a good understanding of where to place certain pieces of furniture in your new home. Odds are, the more disorganized you are, the more you will spend!

3. Make Arrangements for Children and Pets

When it’s time to move, the last thing you want to worry about is the safety of your children and pets being occupied. Make it less stressful by making plans ahead of time for them to stay at a family or friends or have a designated room in your home to ensure that you and your loved ones are comfortable.

4. Handle High-Value Items Yourself

To prevent any loss of certain items like jewelry, currency, important documents, and other collectibles, make it your responsibility to move these items from home to home, regardless of moving company or size of your belongings. This can be a responsibility that is only handled by you, avoiding several liabilities and expenses. This way, you and the moving company can ensure that every item is properly secured and is accounted for prior to moving day.

5. Communicate

Your moving coordinator will be your main contact throughout the process of your move. They will be able to answer any questions you may have, give you resources on how to pack or where to find boxes, and give you a good idea on how the moving process works. Our coordinators are experts in helping make this process as stress-free as possible!
