Moving Trends from 2022

2022 has officially come to an end and we are excited for what’s to come. But before we start to think about what moving will look like in 2023, we must look at the moving trends of 2022. It’s no surprise that millions of Americans move from place to place every year. But if you ever wondered where these people are moving and why they are moving, then look at our recap at the moving trends in 2022.

Who is moving in the United States?

When comparing 2022 to 2021 and 2020, the amount of people who are moving has gone down compared to previous years. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to these lower moving rates, but one of the bigger reasons why less people are moving is because the demographic of people moving is different because of age, income, and education levels. People who are older in age tend to move less, meaning people ranging from 18-29 years old are more likely to move, but only around 32% of this age group decided to move in 2021 and 2022, which contributes to the decrease in moving in 2022.

Another reason why moving rates have decreased in the past year, is the increasing cost of moving and the rising housing costs throughout the United States. Home and rent prices are near a record high and the availability of units has decreased. Meaning, Americans who cannot afford a move and a new home, are most likely to stay put or live with family members or do their move on their own.

Why are people moving?

There are a variety of reasons why people choose to move. Some move to be closer to family or friends, while others move for job opportunities or to be in a more affordable climate.

One of the bigger reasons people are looking to move is to find more of an affordable living cost. Since the economy is still recovering from the pandemic, many Americans are looking to find lower living and housing costs, which they cannot find within their current residence.

Over the past few years, there has been a shift in people working from home more often than working in the office. This can be due to the pandemic, advances in technology that have made it much easier to communicate, and more and more people prefer to work from home because of the ability to save on the price of commuting and the comfort of working in your own home. Not to mention, the rise of remote work has allowed many Americans to look into moving to more affordable cities.
